How to Set Up and Use an iPad mini
Set up your iPad mini, transfer or restore data, learn everyday controls, and troubleshoot common setup issues safely.

Before you begin
Have your iPad mini, its charging cable and power adapter, and access to a reliable Wi-Fi network ready. If you’re transferring data, keep your old device or backup available. The exact buttons and features can differ by iPad mini model; use Apple’s iPad User Guide for model-specific directions.
Before erasing or resetting an iPad, make a backup and verify that it completed and is available to restore. Don’t assume that turning on a backup setting means your data has been backed up.
Set up your iPad mini
Charge the iPad if needed. Press and hold its top button until the Apple logo appears, then follow the prompts on the screen.
Choose your language and region, and connect to Wi-Fi. Activation requires a Wi-Fi or cellular connection. A cellular model may also prompt you to set up cellular service.
Choose Quick Start if you have another compatible Apple device and want to use it to set up the iPad. Otherwise, choose the option to set up without another device and proceed manually.
When asked how to handle your data, choose a transfer or restore method only if you have the device or backup you need. If you’re starting fresh, choose the option not to transfer data.
Sign in with your Apple Account, or choose the onscreen option to create one, recover access, or set it up later. Set a passcode and follow the prompts for Touch ID if offered on your model.
Review the remaining settings, such as automatic updates, Siri, and Screen Time. You can change many choices later in Settings.
For Apple’s setup instructions and account-recovery options, see Set up your iPhone or iPad.
Learn the basics
Go to the Home Screen: On iPad models without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge. If your model has a Home button, press it.
Open Control Center: On many current iPadOS versions, swipe down from the top-right corner. Use it for quick controls such as brightness and Wi-Fi.
Find settings: Open the Settings app to adjust Wi-Fi, display, notifications, privacy, and other preferences.
Get apps: Open the App Store, search for an app, and follow the prompts to download it. Some downloads or purchases may require you to sign in.
Keep software current: Open Settings and look under General for Software Update. For help enabling automatic app updates, see how to turn on automatic app updates on iPhone and iPad.
Troubleshooting
Setup won’t connect or activate
Check that Wi-Fi is working, then try connecting again. For cellular setup, follow the prompts shown for your model. If setup still fails, consult Apple’s setup help.
You can’t sign in
Check that you’re using the Apple Account associated with your data and purchases. Use the recovery option shown during setup or Apple’s setup and account-recovery guidance. Don’t share your password or verification codes with anyone.
You’re considering starting over
Erasing removes data from the iPad. First make and verify a backup you can access. Then review how to wipe an iPhone or iPad and follow the instructions for your model. If you’re unsure whether the backup is complete, don’t erase the device yet.
