Before you begin

Have your Galaxy phone, its charger, a Wi-Fi network and password, and access to the Google or Samsung accounts you plan to use. If you’re moving from another phone, keep the old device available and charged. Check that important data on it is backed up and that you can see the backup before relying on it.

Menu names and setup screens can vary by Galaxy model, region, and software version. For Samsung’s setup overview, see Set up your Galaxy smartphone.

  1. Turn it on and choose your language. Press the Side button, then follow the on-screen prompts. Connect to Wi-Fi when asked.

  2. Choose whether to transfer data. To bring over supported content, use Smart Switch and follow the prompts on both phones. Samsung’s setup guide describes wireless and cable transfer options. You can also choose to set up the Galaxy as new. A transfer may not include every app or item, so check the new phone before relying on it.

  3. Sign in to your accounts. Add a Google Account for Google apps and the Play Store. You can add a Samsung Account for Samsung services that require one. Review setup choices and permissions before accepting them.

  4. Set a screen lock. Choose a PIN, pattern, or password and follow the instructions. If you enable face or fingerprint recognition, keep the secure screen lock as your backup unlock method.

  5. Check that setup is complete. Open essential apps and confirm that contacts, photos, and other important items you expected to transfer are present.

Adjust the screen and home screen

Open Settings to explore display options such as brightness and text size; exact labels vary. On the Home screen, touch and hold an empty area to see available wallpaper and layout options. Review changes before applying them, and choose a layout that makes frequently used apps easy to reach.

Set notifications, sound, and keyboard preferences

Use Settings to review notification and sound options for the apps you use. To customize Samsung Keyboard, open it while typing and tap its gear icon. Samsung’s Galaxy phone basics guide explains keyboard language settings and other starter features; available options can differ by device.

Troubleshooting

  • Wi-Fi won’t connect: Check the network name and password, then try another available network. If setup still cannot continue, consult Samsung support for Galaxy setup and device help.

  • A transfer appears incomplete: Keep both phones available and check Smart Switch’s transfer selections. Some content or app data may need separate setup in the relevant app. For model-specific steps, use Samsung’s Galaxy setup guide.

  • You’re considering a reset: A reset can erase information on the phone. Do not proceed unless you have made and verified a backup of data you need. If you’re unsure how to back up your specific model, ask Samsung Support for model-specific instructions before taking action.
