How to update to Xiaomi HyperOS 4 on compatible devices
Update to HyperOS 4 via Settings → About phone → System update, after confirming eligibility, backing up data, and meeting battery/storage requirements.

Quick start: Install HyperOS 4 in one tap
Open Settings → About phone.
Tap System update (may be labeled Software update or MIUI version).
If HyperOS 4 appears, tap Download → Install and follow the on‑screen prompts.
Prerequisites
1. Verify device eligibility
HyperOS 4 is rolling out to specific Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO models. Confirm that your phone appears on an official list such as the one compiled by GizmoChina (see the device tables below) or the rollout schedule posted by Xiaomi on Weibo (referenced by PhoneDroid). If your model is not listed, the OTA will arrive later or may never be released.
For global (non‑Chinese) variants, expect the OTA a few weeks after the Chinese launch; the exact date is not published yet.
2. Prepare the phone
Battery: ≥ 50 % (keep the charger plugged in during the update).
Storage: ≥ 8 GB free internal space (the package is 3–6 GB plus temporary files).
Network: Stable Wi‑Fi connection; avoid mobile data unless you have an unlimited plan.
Backup: Use Settings → Additional settings → Backup & reset to back up apps, photos, and settings to Mi Cloud, Google Drive, or a computer. A backup is essential because a failed OTA that requires a fastboot flash will erase all data.
Step‑by‑step OTA update
1. Open the update screen
Settings > About phone > System update
On some older builds the path may read Settings > About phone > MIUI version.
2. Check for updates
Tap Check for updates. The phone contacts Xiaomi’s servers.
If HyperOS 4 is available, you will see a notification with the version number and a Download button.
3. Download the package
Tap Download. The download proceeds in the background; you can continue using the phone.
Progress is shown in the notification bar. A typical download takes 10–30 minutes on a 50 Mbps Wi‑Fi network.
4. Install the update
Once the download finishes, tap Install.
The device will reboot automatically and may restart 2–3 times. Do not power off or press any keys during this phase.
5. Post‑install setup
After the final reboot you will see a Welcome screen or Update successful toast.
Follow any quick‑setup steps (agree to new terms, restore backup if prompted).
Verify the new OS version: Settings > About phone > Android version should show Android 17 and HyperOS 4 under the UI version.

Troubleshooting common issues
1. Update not showing
Cause: Staged rollout – your device hasn’t been reached yet.
Fix: Wait 1–2 weeks and re‑check. You can also manually trigger a check by pulling down the notification shade, tapping the System update tile, or using the Mi Community app to request a check.
2. Download stalls or fails
Cause: Unstable Wi‑Fi or insufficient storage.
Fix: Switch to a more reliable network, free additional internal space, and retry.
3. Installation hangs or device boots into recovery loop
Cause: Interrupted OTA (power loss, accidental shutdown).
Fix: Perform a force restart (hold Power for 10–15 seconds). If the loop persists, you may need to flash a full fastboot ROM using Xiaomi’s Mi Flash Tool. Warning: This erases all data; only proceed after confirming you have a recent backup.
4. Battery drain spikes after update
Cause: System re‑optimizing apps and indexing.
Fix: Let the phone sit for 24–48 hours. If drain continues, restart the device and check Settings > Battery & performance for misbehaving apps.
5. Unable to revert to HyperOS 3
Cause: Xiaomi does not support official downgrades.
Fix: Only possible via a full fastboot flash of an older ROM, which wipes data. Not recommended for most users.
How to verify the update succeeded
Open Settings > About phone.
Confirm Android version reads 17 and HyperOS version reads 4.x.
Check System update page – it should show “Your system is up to date”.
Optionally, launch the GetApps store; new HyperOS‑specific apps (e.g., HyperOS Themes) will be available.
Where to get help
If the OTA never appears after several weeks, visit the official Xiaomi support page for your region (linked from the Settings > About phone > System update screen) or the community forum referenced in the rollout schedule.
For fastboot flashing assistance, consult the official Mi Flash Tool guide on Xiaomi’s developer site.
For backup/restore issues, see the Xiaomi backup guide on the Settings > Additional settings > Backup & reset page.
