Prerequisites

  • Have access to a device connected to your FRITZ!Box network and its router interface. The address is commonly fritz.box; if that does not open, use the address or access method documented for your model.

  • Identify the exact FRITZ!Box model and check its current FRITZ!OS version on the interface’s Overview page. Menu names can differ by model or software version.

  • Keep the router powered on and avoid interrupting it while an update is installing. Internet access is needed for the online method.

  • As a precaution, save a settings backup before updating. In the interface, look under System > Backup. Save the backup file somewhere you can find it and confirm that it is present. Backup and restore options can vary by model and FRITZ!OS version.

Update FRITZ!OS online

  1. Open the FRITZ!Box interface in a browser and sign in.

  2. Select System > Update.

  3. Open the FRITZ!OS Version tab, if shown, and choose Find New FRITZ!OS.

  4. If an update is offered, review the on-screen information and select Start Update or the equivalent button. Follow any prompts in the interface.

  5. Wait for the router to finish and become available again. Do not unplug it or close the process because the connection temporarily drops.

  6. Reopen System > Update or the Overview page and check which FRITZ!OS version is installed.

If you need to update manually

Use a manual update only when the online method is unavailable or the official instructions for your model recommend it. Firmware files are model-specific: using the wrong file can cause problems.

  1. Check the exact model name on the router’s Overview page or its product label.

  2. Find the official manual-update instructions and firmware download for that exact model. The supplied manual update guide for the FRITZ!Box 3490 describes selecting a downloaded .image file under System > Update. It applies to the 3490; do not assume its file or every menu detail applies to another model.

  3. Follow the model-specific instructions to select the firmware file and start the update. Do not install a file unless its model and source match the official instructions.

  4. Wait for installation to complete, then check the installed version. Save a fresh settings backup afterward, as recommended in the manual-update guide.

No update appears

The latest release may not yet be offered for your particular model, or the device may be managed by an internet provider. Check the router’s exact model and consult the official FRITZ!OS update help for model-specific guidance. Do not install firmware intended for a different model.

The update page or download is unavailable

Check that your device is connected to the FRITZ!Box and that the router has internet access for an online update. If the interface has no Update option, contact your provider or consult its router documentation. For manual-update problems, use the official instructions for your exact model rather than guessing at a download location or file.

The connection drops during installation

A temporary interruption can occur while the router updates and restarts. Give it time to finish before trying again. If it does not return to normal, consult the official support guidance for your model before attempting a reset or other action that could remove settings.
