How to Set Up Starlink and Troubleshoot Common Connection Problems

A practical guide to installing Starlink, connecting devices, and narrowing down common service and Wi‑Fi problems.

Prerequisites

  • A Starlink kit with its dish, router, power supply, and supplied cables.

  • A phone or tablet with the Starlink app installed, plus access to your Starlink account.

  • A stable mounting location with a broad, unobstructed view of the sky. Use the app’s obstruction check to assess candidate locations before permanently mounting the dish.

  • A suitable power outlet and a safe route for the cable. Keep the cable away from sharp edges and avoid putting it where it can be crushed or tripped over.

Hardware and setup steps can differ by Starlink kit. Follow the instructions provided for your specific model; do not manually reposition a dish designed to align itself.

  1. Choose and prepare the location. Use the Starlink app’s visibility or obstruction tool to check the sky view. Trees, buildings, or other obstacles may interrupt service. Secure the dish on a stable mount that is appropriate for your installation.

  2. Connect the equipment. With the system unplugged, attach the dish cable to the correct port on the router or power supply for your kit. Check that the connectors are fully seated and the cable is not damaged. Connect the equipment to power and let it start up.

  3. Configure Wi‑Fi. Open the Starlink app and follow its setup prompts. Connect your phone to the Starlink Wi‑Fi network if prompted, then set a network name and password. Menu names and Wi‑Fi setup can vary by router and kit.

  4. Check service. In the app, review the connection status and obstruction information. Connect a device to Wi‑Fi and try a website or app. If the dish or router is still starting, give it time before changing settings.

  5. Test the intended coverage. Check Wi‑Fi near the router first, then in the rooms where you plan to use it. If service is good nearby but weak farther away, that points to a Wi‑Fi coverage issue rather than necessarily a satellite connection problem.

No internet or an offline status

  • Check that the router and dish have power and that the cables are firmly connected at both ends.

  • Read the app’s status message. “Booting” can mean the system is still starting; “Searching” may mean the dish is looking for satellites or its view is obstructed.

  • Check the app for obstructions and confirm the dish and mount have not shifted.

  • Restart by unplugging the system, waiting about 30 seconds, and reconnecting power. Allow time for it to restart before judging the result.

Intermittent service

  • Recheck the obstruction view. Nearby branches, new construction, or a changed dish position can affect the sky view.

  • Inspect the cable for visible damage and confirm its connectors are secure. If the app reports a poor cable connection, power down before checking the connections.

  • Severe weather can temporarily affect satellite service. Wait for conditions to improve and see whether the connection returns.

Wi‑Fi is weak or unavailable

  • Test near the Starlink router. If the connection works there but not in another room, the likely issue is Wi‑Fi reach or interference.

  • Restart the router and confirm your device is connected to the correct Wi‑Fi network.

  • If you use a separate router, temporarily test with the Starlink Wi‑Fi to help determine whether the issue is with the added network equipment.

A factory reset may remove custom network settings. Do not reset until you have verified that you can access your Starlink account and have recorded the settings you will need to configure the network again. Check the instructions for your exact router model before proceeding; reset methods vary. If you cannot confirm the impact for your equipment, contact Starlink Support first.

If the problem persists, submit a support request through the Starlink app or website. Include the app’s status or alerts, when the issue began, the troubleshooting steps you tried, and clear photos of the installation and cable connections when useful.
