Before you begin

Set aside your Xbox console, its power cable, an HDMI cable, and a TV or monitor with an HDMI input. You’ll also need access to a broadband internet connection, your Wi-Fi network name and password, and a Microsoft account. Xbox’s getting-started guide lists these basic setup needs.

Place the console somewhere with room for ventilation. If your router is nearby, an Ethernet cable is another way to connect to the internet; otherwise, use Wi-Fi.

Set up the console

  1. Connect the console to the TV with the HDMI cable, then connect its power cable to a suitable outlet. Select the TV’s corresponding HDMI input.

  2. Turn on the console and follow the instructions shown on screen. Menu wording and setup options can vary by console model.

  3. When asked, sign in with your Microsoft account. If you don’t have one, follow the on-screen option to create an account. Keep your password private and enter it only on the console or an official Microsoft sign-in screen.

  4. Continue through the setup prompts. If the console offers a system update, keep it connected to power and the internet while the update completes. Don’t turn it off during an update.

For model-specific setup steps, use the official Xbox Series X|S setup instructions or the digital setup guide.

  1. Open Settings on the console.

  2. Select General, then Network settings. Menu labels or locations may differ slightly by model or software version.

  3. Choose Set up wireless network and select your Wi-Fi network from the list.

  4. Enter the Wi-Fi password carefully, then follow the prompts to connect.

  5. In Network settings, use the available connection test to check whether the console can reach the network and internet.

Troubleshooting

  • Your network isn’t listed: Check that the router is on and nearby. Restarting the console and router can help; wait for the router to reconnect before trying again.

  • The password is rejected: Check the password against the router’s label or the details saved by the person who manages the network. Watch for capitalization and similar-looking characters.

  • The console connects but cannot get online: Check whether other devices can use the same Wi-Fi. If none can, the problem may be with the router or internet service. If only the Xbox has trouble, run the console’s network test again and consult Xbox Support for model-specific help.

  • An update or setup step fails: Check the network connection and retry the on-screen step. Avoid resetting the console as a first troubleshooting measure. A reset can remove data; before considering any reset, make and verify a backup of anything you need to keep, then review the official support guidance for the specific reset option and its effects.
