How to Set Up a New MacBook Pro
A practical checklist for preparing, setting up, and troubleshooting a new MacBook Pro without risking the data on your old computer.

How to Set Up a New MacBook Pro
Before you begin
Set aside time to complete setup, and have a reliable Wi-Fi connection available. Some parts of Setup Assistant require internet access. Keep your new MacBook Pro connected to power during setup.
If you plan to transfer files from another computer, make and verify a backup of that computer first. Confirm the backup completed and that you can access it. Keep the original computer and its files unchanged until you have checked that the transfer worked and your important data is available.
Have your Apple Account sign-in details ready if you use one. If you use a password manager, make sure you can access it from another device in case you need credentials during setup.
Set up your MacBook Pro
1. Start Setup Assistant
Open the lid or press the power button, then follow the on-screen prompts. For Apple’s model-specific setup instructions, see the MacBook Pro setup guide.
2. Choose your country, language, and network
Select the requested region and language, then connect to Wi-Fi when prompted. If your network is unavailable, check that its name and password are correct, or try a different trusted network. Setup Assistant may not let you complete every step without an internet connection.
3. Choose whether to transfer data
When asked, you can transfer information from another Mac or a backup, or set up the Mac without transferring data now. Follow the on-screen directions for the option you choose. Keep the source Mac or backup available and powered as needed. Don’t erase, trade in, or otherwise wipe the old computer as part of this process.
4. Create your account and choose settings
Follow the prompts to create a user account and configure available options, such as accessibility settings. Sign in to your Apple Account if you want to use the services offered during setup. Use a strong account password and store it somewhere secure. If your MacBook Pro has Touch ID, you can set it up when prompted or later.
5. Finish setup and check your data
Once you reach the desktop, connect to Wi-Fi and check that transferred files and essential apps are available. Install any available macOS updates through System Settings. For additional model-specific information, consult Apple’s MacBook Pro Getting Started Guide.
Troubleshooting
Setup is stuck or Wi-Fi will not connect
Check that the router is working and that you have the correct network password. If possible, try another trusted network, then restart setup or the Mac and try again.
A transfer does not appear to finish
Keep both computers or the backup connected and follow any on-screen instructions. Avoid interrupting a transfer unnecessarily. If the transfer fails, finish setting up without it if that option is offered, and seek Apple’s model-specific guidance before retrying.
You cannot sign in or need support
Check that the account details are correct and that the Mac has an internet connection. For account access problems, downloads, or help specific to your Mac, use Apple Support and follow the relevant support options there. Keep your old computer and verified backup until you have confirmed that the new Mac has the files you need.
